I love my Gadgets!

This is how most of us start & end our day with and mostly I am no exception to it. Most of us multitask with technology. When someone wants to really share we listen while watching television, simultaneously scrolling social media, answering emails or taking calls. But are we actually present in any of those moments? Your watch is beeping, laptop is lying around, phone is in your hand, but focus is none of them! We have even reached a state where even when we type emoticons, we don’t actually express them. When you write LOL or share a mad laughter emoticon, do you actually laugh like crazy?

Next time you are taking a public transport, watch your neighbors. You may not see more than 10% of travellers without a phone. The presence in the moment is reducing drastically and its direct connection is with our mental health, stress and anxiety of keeping a track of other people’s lives. And this is a major unaddressed concern in today’s life.

Gadgets, especially our smartphones take us away from the present moment and take us in a not-needed-extra-information scenario for everything. It gives you information mostly more than what we need and less of joy & happiness. Consciously go back to your times of scrolling any social media for long hours – have you ever come back from it feeling fulfilled, happy and content? Mostly you won’t because these feelings are connected with you and people around you. Emotions are what makes us human beings and alive. Go and try to remember moments from last 10 years of your life – what are first five things you remember? They must be moments filled with either extreme happiness, sadness, despair, anger, achievement or some other moment filled with a strong emotion. What moments you remember from spending time on your gadget?

Gadgets are there to help us to live our life more productively and make our life better, not the other way around. I love the information ‘Google’ gives us and which is tremendously helpful, the fun videos we get to watch, so much of learning online and more. While we have accepted that our life is becoming more online now, we need to be become aware of its repercussions too. One of the repercussion I saw was that when my child saw me and my wife on phone regularly, he too started to ask for it all the time. Isn’t this a common situation in every house! Well, they will learn what they observe and this is a big price to pay if I spend all my time on gadgets. From the time I started spending some with with my child going for a walk, reading a book and playing, things started to change. Now, we all as a family balance our time with nature, gadgets and real talks. My child feels much more happy, joyful and active. Hence I realized that the need to create this balance is essential.

Introspect your need to spending more than needed time with your gadget – is the need of your profession(which is great) or ignoring relation around you or running away from a situation in your life to know more about others. This introspection will help you to create a balance between your life offline and online. Nothing is good or bad, its just the price we pay for our choice. Go ahead and make your choice. I actually sometimes ask myself after spending time on social media - Why do I really need to know so much about other people’s lives or tell them what is going on in my life? I got my answer and it helped me to get my answer. Go ahead and get yours.

While we are here, can we try to experience a week with limited access of gadgets to start with?! Or better try to imbibe a life with limited use of gadgets on a daily basis. Wait, can we?! (smiley emoticon)

P.S - I am smiling with the emoticon.
